This June Portable Studios brings leading American design practitioner Brooks Atwood to Australia, so if you happen to live in the Land Down Under, you’re in luck. Brooks advocates designing from a place of risk – staring failure square in the face and finding creativity in impossibility. In the lead-up to his tour of Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney, Brooks took the time to chat with Portable about his trip to Australia, unorthodox approach to design and techniques for inspiring creative practice. In this exclusive series of talks, presented by Portable, Brooks will expound upon how design ideas can be conceived and harnessed using practical and digital tools.

The events will be held in Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney and consist of a keynote presentation, Q&A and networking drinks. This event is a must-see for those working across architecture, interior design, industrial design, branding, graphic design, art direction, marketing and advertising.

The Sylki chair is featured in the Black & White section along with other innovative designs

Our ideas behind these chairs are simple. We wanted to create a chair that would be a continuos source of rejuvenation to the park. It is crafted from a combination of soil, seeds and beeswax to slowly spread love and peace throughout the park.

This is a natural cycle. Rain brings growth, rejuvenation and color. Once fertilized, the composite will grow new, beautiful plants around the Battery Green and beyond. The form of this chair is derived from human hands molding raw earth. We plan to allow children and families the opportunity to select their own ingredients at the conservancy during the mixing process. This will make every plant chair unique and create returning visitors, eager to see their flowers bloom.

The identical twin to this chair is its opposite. It is a permanent version made from recycled plastic bottles discarded from a single day in NYC. It is the exact same form as the chair made from soil, but is to be made permanent by using P.E.T. plastic collected from the waste treatment plant.

Manufacturing of the plant chair will be made with our unique blend of ingredients by local artisan craftsmen. Manufacturing of the plastic chair is made of injected molded P.E.T. in facilities ideally located next door to the recycling plant, where all of the water bottles end up.

This is a closed loop all within New York. Our trash becomes our chairs.

We killed it at New York Design week’s WantedDesign event.  Karim Rashid stopped by to say “it’s f*@$ing brilliant” and that he loved it!  Thanks Karim!  Antoine Roset, Patrizia Moroso, Bradford Shellhammer, Jamie Gray & Established & Sons stopped by to see what all the fuss was about! Design Milk gave us tons of love and we even got a huge front page post on Design Within Reach.  Oh yea, and Brooks was also turned into wallpaper printed on HP Latex Printers which appeared with Giulio Cappellini & Antoine Roset (photo by Ikon) – and for the creme de la creme; a Brooks Atwood sandwich between Karim Rashid, Giulio Cappellini & WantedDesign (photo by Ikon).

Metropolis Magazine awarded us for our 3-d printed spoon, Silverair!  Woohoo!  Thanks Metropolis mag!

And we launched the chandelier version of Tetra called Tetra7!

Brooks will speaking at the Museum of Arts & Design’s event “Emerging US Design Practices”. Creating a platform for emerging design practitioners to have the public see and respond to their work, WantedDesign teams with MAD for a Pecha Kucha event, presenting some of the most promising emerging American design talent. A variety of fresh new designers will present their works before an audience of design businesses, representatives, journalists, curators, and critics. Through this free event, MAD and WantedDesign use the venue of the museum as a communal focal point to rally and propel new design possibilities. With Brooks Atwood, Joe Doucet, Debra Folz, Chris Hardy, Jill Malek, Frederick McSwain and Danielle Trofe. All have works featured at WantedDesign in May 2013.

The program is part of the After the Museum: The Home Front 2013 exhibition at the MAD.
